Watercolour Painting Skills 1

WATERCOLOUR SKILLS - OVERVIEW

This course will teach the skills needed to learn the seductive art of watercolour painting. Watercolour can be used to make inspiring presentations for prospective clients. Not only is watercolour a useful medium for building a portfolio of work, but also the medium functions as an effective tool in helping students understand the formal elements of design (colour, form, line, texture, light). A solid understanding of these elements is the building block on which great design is created. Watercolour is an accessible vehicle to explore these themes - often producing stunning results within weeks.

The course will be structured in such a way as to teach important principles of design while helping students learn how to manipulate watercolour paint. Each day will start with exercises designed to explore a different formal element of design, and finish with applying these principles to a landscape or an interior. At the end of the course students will have started to build a portfolio of images of the built environment and / or landscapes in watercolour paint.

Drawing Skills - Tutor

DRAWING SKILLS - OVERVIEW

This programme of lessons is devised to orientate drawing skills towards interior design. Whether the student has an art degree or has not drawn since early school makes no difference. The lessons have been carefully devised to cover all aspects of creative drawing that will enable the student to become a confident, creative designer. Towards the end of the course student's work should be of a standard to show in their portfolio. They should also be able to sit with a client and be able to draw out ideas freehand. A designer is only limited by his / her own imagination, which will be greatly expanded by the mastery of relevant drawing skills. It is greatly recommended that the students also attend the watercolour skills class in order to interpret these drawings into full colour renderings.

DRAWING SKILLS 8-10 weeks course.

Module 1 of 10 - HOW TO BEGIN
Students will learn, with the use of reference points and "sighting" how to represent what they see. With the use of special exercises they will magically draw ellipses and circles freehand. By the end of the lesson they will have drawn various objects in 3 dimensions.

Module 2 of 10 - STILL LIFE - THE BASICS ACHIEVED
In this lesson the students will learn how to relate one object to another. By the end of the session the student will have achieved an entire still life composition.

Module 3 of 10 - SHADING TECHNIQUES
The student will learn 5 different shading approaches. They will learn to shade a sphere and look at how lighting affects shading. They will then apply these exercises to the shading of a still life of two apples.

Module 4 of 10 - DRAWING SURFACES
An arrangement of objects will be drawn which will include reflective surfaces, metallic surfaces, shadows etc. The student will incorporate these into a still life.

Module 5 of 10 - ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE
One point perspective explained and by end of session each student will have achieved 6 different drawings of an interior using one-point perspective.

Module 6 of 10 - A KITCHEN INTERIOR
By the end of the lesson the student will have achieved a drawing of a complex kitchen interior. This will include all the fittings, tiled floor, work units, tables, lighting etc.

Module 7 of 10 - FURTHER ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE OF INTERIOR
The students will have been encouraged to bring in photographs or drawings of their own homes, or from any other source including magazines. These will be drawn up in perspective by the end of this session.

Module 8 of 10 - UNDERSTANDING 2-POINT PERSPECTIVE
2-point perspective exercises given. At the end of the session a 2-point perspective drawing of lounge\waiting room will be achieved. They will also see what can be achieved by altering the horizon line.

Module 9 of 10 - MULTI-POINT PERSPECTIVE\ FURNITURE
By the end of the session the students will be able to place chairs and various pieces of furniture in perspective. Although they will all be using the same horizon line they will be using differing vanishing points.

Module 10 of 10 - RENDERING OWN PROJECT
Students should bring their own projects to be drawn-up. They will be at a standard to present to clients or employers. These drawings should be collected towards a presentation portfolio.

These lessons can continue as the student wants to progress.

PAINT FINISHES

BRIEF CV

A Brazilian-born Spanish artist who came to London twenty years ago. Growing up in Spain from the age of eight, he was influenced by the movement of the flamenco dancer, bullfighter and the movement of local street life from the perspective of a visiting American painter to his home town of Malaga.

Our Artist has worked and collaborated in the last twenty years for Interior Designers in different countries of Europe, he has worked extensively on commissions worldwide and some of his recent work includes Airport Terminals, Yacht Interiors, Churches, Hotels, Theatres, to one of commissions for private clients. Tutorials - Senior Mentor

Tutorials are based on individual practical projects particular to each student. The projects are developed from two sources:

    1. Real client based projects as obtained from either the students projects or from ADA
    2. Virtual projects designed by the student + tutor in collaboration to provide an idealised version of a project particularly favoured by the student.

The range of project subjects is infinite encompassing any design format:
Architectural, landscape, interior, furniture, product, lighting, exhibition, graphics, branding, etc.

Students are encouraged to attend also for support, research, development and critique / evaluation of their current areas of activity & study within the school.

The basis for the format is co-design team in practice i.e. learning by practice as a lead or co designer. Students attend by individual organisation at their preference. Individual programmes are planned in collaboration with the Tutor.

    Photoshop

    Why use Photoshop?

Brief history of basic traditional photography methods and processes in relation to compositing photographs using masking and double/multiple exposure methods to give us an understanding of where Photoshop has come from and how this and equivalent technologies have evolved in a digital medium.

    Beginner Level

    Introduction
Photoshop was originally developed as a digital solution to the traditional technologies, and the skills and processes used to select and manipulate areas in Photoshop are very similar to preceding technologies in a number of ways.

    Application Overview
    Starting the application
Opening files from the hard drive, and opening new files
Saving files, and choosing file formats
File Management and Backing up Files Overview
    RAM and Hard Drive requirements
Use of Memory Stick to save files on the move.

    Resizing Images
    Understanding resolution and pixels

Using the Modify menu to modify selections
    With selections

    Editing and saving selections
Complex Selections may take some time to perfect, so it is always wise to save selections in case you can reload them later. (Or if you do not get time to finish masking a selection and need to return in another session to complete the selection)

    Transformations using Free Transform Tool

The Free Transform tool is used for scaling (resizing), rotating, and distorting elements of an image (which need to be on their own layer, so may need to have had a selection applied to bring the pixels onto their own layer).
